Introduction

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are institutions of national importance established through an Act of Parliament 1956. From the Academic Session 2004-05, IITs started conducting a Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM). IIT JAM 2020 has been released on 5th September 2019. Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. is a national level examination.

Educational Qualification

The candidates who qualify in JAM 2020 shall have to fulfil the following Eligibility Requirements (ER) for admissions in IITs.

  • All candidates admitted through JAM should have a Bachelor’s degree.

  • In the qualifying degree, the aggregate marks or CGPA/CPI without rounding-off (taking into account all subjects, including languages and subsidiaries, all years combined) should be at least 55% or 5.5 out of 10 for General/OBC (NCL) category candidates and 50% or 5.0 out of 10 for SC/ST and PwD category candidates.

IIT JAM 2020 Marking Scheme

Section A

Out of a total of 30 questions, 10 questions are of one mark each and 20 questions are of two marks each. There is negative marking of 1/3 mark for each question (that holds one mark weightage) answered incorrectly. Also, 2/3 marks are deducted for each incorrect question which carries two marks weightage. There is no negative marking for any question left unanswered.

Section B

Each correct answer in this section is awarded two marks. There is no negative marking in this section.

Section C

Out of the total 20 questions, first 10 questions are of one mark each and other 10 questions are of two marks each. There is no negative marking in this section as well.

IIT JAM 2020 Result will be declared on March 20, 2020. Candidates can check their results only through online mode from the official website.  

Procedure to check the result:

 

Step 1: Visit the Official Website of IIT JAM.

Step 2: Click on the Applicant Login button present on the Home page of the website. On clicking the link, the portal of the JAM Online Application Processing System (JOAPS) will open.

Step 3: Enter enrollment/ email ID and JOAPS password.

Step 4: Evaluate the arithmetic expression given and put the value in the space provided.

Step 5: Click on the Submit button.

IIT JAM 2020 Counselling Procedure

Step – 1: Filling of Admission Application Form

Candidates applying for admission in various courses first have to fill an application form to participate in IIT JAM counselling. Candidates have to fill the form with accurate details and verify the details before submitting the application form.

Steps to fill the IIT JAM Counselling Admission form:

  • Visit the official website of IIT JAM.

  • Click on the appropriate link and enter the login credentials, irrespective of the IISc and IITs where the admission is sought, to fill the admission form.

  • After that, provide the requisite details such as choice of programmes in order of preference, academic qualification, aggregate/CGPA, category, etc.

  • After filling the programme preference and proceeding to payment.

  • The application fee for the JAM 2020 admission form has to be paid online only through using Credit Card/ Debit Card/Net Banking.

Note: The application fee will be non-refundable.

  • After making the payment and upload the scanned image on the admission website in the prescribed format.

Note: 

  • Only one admission form can be filled, therefore candidates must be careful while they fill the admission form.

  • Candidates belonging to the OBC-NCL category have to submit a valid certificate along with the admission form after the declaration of IIT JAM 2020 Result.

  • If found incomplete the admission form of JAM 2020 will not be considered.

Step – 2: Accept or Reject Choices

  • In this step, candidates have to log in to the official website and make choices from any of the options appearing on the screen. They can opt “Accept and Upgrade”, “Accept and Freeze” or “Reject and Quit” option.

  • After choosing the option and booking the seat, candidates have to pay “Seat Booking Fee” through online payment modes using Credit Card/ Debit Card/Net Banking.

  • If a candidate chooses to withdraw, then an amount of INR1000/- will be deducted from their Seat Booking Fee and the final amount will be refunded.

Step – 3: Reporting to the Allotted Centre

  • After seat allotment, candidates have to report at the allotted IITs, NITs, and CFTIs along with all the documents required to be submitted at the time of admission.

  • Candidates who fail to accept the admission offer are not considered for the further admission process.

Note:

  • IIT JAM 2020 Third and final admission list will be prepared if seats still remain vacant.

  • Qualified candidates who are not allotted a seat in the 1st and 2nd admission round will remain on the waiting list.

  • Anyone who does not accept the acceptance offer from the institute will be removed from the admission process.

  • Candidates who qualify JAM 2020 must fill the admission form.

  • Only one admission form can be filled therefore candidates must be careful while they fill the admission form.

  • If found incomplete the admission form of JAM 2020 will not be considered.

IIT JAM 2020 - Counselling Required Documents

The candidates are required to carry the following documents in original along with Xerox copies at the time of counselling:

  • 10th class mark sheet and passing certificate

  • 12th or HSC mark sheet

  • Qualifying degree certificate (mark sheets of all semesters)

  • National certificate for candidates belonging to general category

  • Category certificate (if applicable)

  • PwD certificate (if applicable)

  • JAM Scorecard and Admit Card

A candidate can apply for either one or two out of seven JAM test papers subject to the restriction imposed by the Test Schedule given in the JAM Information Brochure

How do I apply ONLINE?

Go to the link "How to apply?", read the instructions and apply using the JAM Online Application Processing System (JOAPS) link provided in JAM 2020 website.

Can I use one E-mail address to fill multiple application forms?

Yes. Enter your latest Percentage of Marks/CGPA in the field.

Do I have to send the printout of the application form?

No. You do not have to send the printout of the application form to the Organizing Institute (IIT Kharagpur) or any other JAM zonal Offices. This is to kept with you for records.

FAQ Answer

When will I receive my admit card?

Admit Card can only be downloaded from the JOAPS website from 7th January 2020. Admit Cards will NOT be sent by post or as e-mail attachment.

Can I bring a soft copy of the Admit card (in mobile phone/ tablet/ laptop) to gain entry to the examination hall?

No. Hard copy (printed in colour) of the Admit Card should be brought to the examination centre along with at least one original (not photocopied/scanned copy) and valid (not expired) Identity Document (ID), whose details have been entered while filling the application.
